Drywall finish levels

From bare board to a flawless wall

Every smooth wall is built in layers. Drywall finishing is graded on six levels from the Gypsum Association's GA-214 standard. Each level adds more mud and more sanding at the seams, until Level 5 covers the whole wall in a thin skim coat.

The story of a wall

Six levels, one wall at a time

Here is what happens at each level, what you would see on a real job, and where each level makes sense.

Level 0

Hung only

Every wall starts here. Sheets of drywall are cut, lifted and screwed to the framing. You can see every seam, every screw and the bare paper face.

What you see
Seams, screw heads, bare paper.
Good for
Temporary walls and spaces no one will see.
Level 1

Tape set

Paper tape is bedded in joint compound along every seam to lock the sheets together. It stops cracks, but the wall still looks unfinished.

What you see
A thin line of tape on each seam.
Good for
Attics, above ceilings and service areas.
Level 2

One coat

A knife coat goes over the tape and every screw head is spotted. Edges and tool marks are still easy to see.

What you see
Narrow bands of mud and spotted screws.
Good for
Garages and walls that will get tile.
Level 3

Two coats

A second, wider coat hides the tape and fills the low spots. Under paint, the seams can still show through.

What you see
Wider bands and smoother spots.
Good for
Walls that will get a heavy texture.
Level 4

Three coats, sanded

A third coat is feathered wide and sanded smooth. This is the standard finish in most homes.

What you see
Seams blended in and ready for paint.
Good for
Flat or eggshell paint in normal light.
Level 5

Full skim coat

The whole wall gets a thin skim coat and a final sanding, so seams and paper take paint the same way. It stays smooth even in strong side light.

What you see
One even surface with no joints anywhere.
Good for
Big windows, cove lighting, dark or glossy paint.

Why Level 5

Side light shows everything

When sunlight rakes across a wall from a big window, the taped seams and screw spots on a Level 4 wall can show through the paint. Painters call this flashing. A Level 5 skim coat removes it, which is the standard expected in high-end Caribbean villas.

The real thingLight from the side on a wall with mudded seams. Every joint and ridge shows. Paint alone will not hide this, but a Level 5 skim coat does.
  • Big ocean-view windows and bright Caribbean sun create strong side light on walls and ceilings.
  • Hidden LED cove lighting washes straight down ceilings and shows every seam.
  • Dark colors and satin or semi-gloss paint reveal more than flat white.
